John Davies Prints
New Colours on 'NZ' Watermarked Paper
1873
1d Brown
The printing of the 1d brown on NZ watermarked paper was one of the final printings and the plate had reached an advanced state of wear. No mint examples have been reported and used copies are very rare. Most of the copies seen have the watermark either inverted or inverted and reversed.
Without doubt this is one of the hardest stamps for collectors to find, and one of the most expensive to purchase once you’ve found it! 'The Collection' is still searching for this item but we'll leave a place for one just below! If you have a spare do sing out 😁.
Earliest reported use of SG 140: 5 July 1873, a single cancelled at Christchurch.

2d Vermilion
The majority of the printing of the 2d vermilion stamp on NZ watermarked paper was carried out with the watermark being inverted or inverted and reversed. The shade is usually a deeper vermilion than other stamps printed in the final years of the Chalon issues, but the retouched portions of Plate II of the 2d may give the appearance of being worn.
The earliest reported use of SG 141 is the 20 October 1873, single with Dunedin CDS.
